Tony Iommi’s From the Dark brings Jørn Lande into a collaboration whose roots stretch back more than two decades. In this conversation with Metal Walt, the singer discusses their early writing sessions, the years between them and an opportunity he had begun to think might never arrive.
Why was this finally the right time? That question opens a conversation about creative trust, finding an individual voice alongside Iommi’s unmistakable guitar sound and making a record that feels like a band.
Inside the Making of From the Dark
Lande initially expected to contribute to only part of the album. Walt asks how those first songs helped shape its direction, leading into the process of choosing riffs and developing material with Iommi and producer Mike Exeter.
“Stormwatcher” becomes a focal point as Lande considers what gives their partnership its own identity. The discussion also touches on making an album for vinyl and the singer’s renewed enthusiasm for collecting records.
Dark Lyrics, Dracula and Brian May
The cinematic imagery of “World Alone,” the meaning behind “Legacy” and the supernatural territory of “Death Wake” give Walt plenty to explore. An old Black Sabbath movie poster inside Iommi’s home enters the story, but its connection to the songwriting is best heard from Lande himself.
Brian May’s guest solo provides another thread, alongside Lande’s thoughts on Becky Baldwin and Karl Brazil. Walt also raises the question fans will want addressed: could this lineup bring From the Dark to the stage?
Remembering Ronnie James Dio
Walt recalls seeing Lande at the High Voltage Festival tribute to Ronnie James Dio. Lande revisits the preparation and emotional weight of that appearance, keeping the occasion’s purpose firmly in view.
