Bon Scott’s Final Night: New Documentary Explores the Tragedy and the Unanswered Questions
Oct 28, 2026
Bon Scott’s voice, swagger and songwriting helped make AC/DC one of rock’s most electrifying bands. His death in February 1980 ended a defining chapter in the group’s history, leaving fans with a remarkable catalog and questions that continue to spark debate.
A new documentary, The Death of Bon Scott, revisits the singer’s life, final hours and the discussion surrounding his possible contribution to Back in Black.
Created by Simon Alkin Feilberg of Icons Remembered, the approximately 30-minute film combines interviews, archival audio and AI recreations of scenes from Scott’s last night. Much of its foundation comes from author Jesse Fink’s research across three books: The Youngs: The Brothers Who Built AC/DC, Bon: The Last Highway and Bon: Notes from the Highway.
Fink, who has joined us on Metal Mayhem ROC several times, shared the documentary with us, calling it “the most honest and best put-together documentary I’ve seen on the death of Bon Scott.”
The Man Behind the Legend
Before examining Scott’s death, the documentary follows his musical journey through the Valentines and Fraternity to his eventual arrival in AC/DC.
Those early chapters reveal a performer who spent years finding his musical home. Alongside Angus and Malcolm Young, Scott found the perfect setting for his distinctive voice, wicked humor and gift for turning everyday observations into unforgettable lyrics.
The film also examines the pressures behind the success. Friends and associates recall a singer growing weary of relentless touring and talking about wanting a break. Their recollections bring a more personal perspective to a frontman whose public image was built around energy, confidence and hard living.
Revisiting Bon’s Final Night
The documentary turns to Scott’s night out in London on February 18, 1980, and his death the following day.
It revisits the familiar account of heavy drinking followed by Scott being left overnight in a car, then examines testimony gathered by Fink that challenges elements of the timeline and raises questions about who was present.
The film discusses allegations of possible heroin involvement while acknowledging that there is no hard evidence establishing that heroin contributed to Scott’s death. It also allows for the possibility that events unfolded as acquaintance Alistair Kinnear described.
These are conflicting accounts and interpretations, with the documentary inviting viewers to consider the evidence rather than presenting a proven alternative explanation.
The Back in Black Question
The film also explores one of the most debated subjects in AC/DC history: whether any of Scott’s lyrical work found its way onto Back in Black.
Fink outlines his position through accounts involving Scott’s notebooks, conversations before his death and the material being developed for AC/DC’s next album.
Brian Johnson’s response is also included. Johnson firmly maintains that he wrote the lyrics himself during the album’s creation.
The documentary presents those competing positions without establishing that Scott’s lyrics appeared on the finished record. It also recognizes Johnson’s vocal performances and the extraordinary achievement of the album AC/DC made following its devastating loss.
A Continuing Conversation
For Metal Mayhem ROC listeners familiar with Jesse Fink’s appearances on our show, The Death of Bon Scott offers another way to explore the research behind his books.
It brings together Scott’s musical journey, the accounts of his final night and AC/DC’s next chapter in a film that gives fans plenty to consider. Through it all, the reason this story continues to matter is clear: Bon Scott left a mark on rock and roll that has never faded.
