A Heavy Metal Halloween with Life of Agony’s Alan Robert: Gore, Comics and River Runs Red

Nov 01, 2026

Life of Agony bassist and primary songwriter Alan Robert has built a creative career where heavy music, illustration and horror continually intersect. In this Halloween weekend conversation, Robert joins Metal Walt to discuss The Beauty of Horror, his new Conjuring coloring book and the Fuzz Off and Die signature bass pedal.

The interview also travels back to Life of Agony’s Brooklyn beginnings and the influences that helped shape the band’s landmark debut, River Runs Red.

The Beauty of Horror and The Conjuring

Robert explains how a lifelong fascination with horror eventually developed into The Beauty of Horror, a series that has expanded far beyond its original adult-coloring-book concept.

He also takes Metal Walt inside the challenge of adapting The Conjuring universe—including Annabelle, The Nun and the Warrens’ occult museum—into detailed coloring pages. How do you translate films known for darkness and shadow into line art while still giving horror fans something new to discover?

From Metal Artwork to the Perfect Bass Fuzz

The conversation explores Robert’s commissioned artwork for Black Sabbath, Pantera and Type O Negative, along with the early experience that helped him develop his eye for intricate heavy-metal imagery.

Robert also reveals the story behind Fuzz Off and Die, the signature pedal created after a 30-year search for a particular bass sound. The journey includes a connection to Geezer Butler’s equipment and the designer who helped Robert finally capture what he had been hearing in his head.

River Runs Red, Pink Floyd and Type O Negative

Looking back on River Runs Red, Robert discusses producer Josh Silver’s role in defining Life of Agony’s early sound and identifies an unexpected Pink Floyd album that deeply influenced the band’s emotional approach.

He also shares where Life of Agony can be spotted inside Type O Negative’s “Black No. 1” video.
