Europe has never been interested in simply recreating its past. In 2026, that philosophy is especially clear as the band celebrates 40 years of The Final Countdown while pushing forward with a heavier new album, Come This Madness.
Keyboardist Mic Michaeli joins Metal Mayhem ROC’s Metal Walt for a conversation about where Europe is today—musically, creatively and onstage—and why the new record represents another step in the band’s continuing evolution.
Europe Pushes Forward with Come This Madness
For listeners who primarily associate Europe with its breakthrough ’80s hits, Come This Madness may offer a different picture of the band. The new material leans into heavier riffs and a more guitar-driven approach while retaining the melodies, keyboards and textures that have long been part of Europe’s sound.
Michaeli explains why his own approach remains centered on what each song needs rather than making sure the keyboards are always prominent. He also discusses why Europe spent considerably more time developing this album before entering the studio.
The Stories Behind the New Album
There is plenty happening beyond the music itself.
Michaeli takes Walt inside the concept behind the Come This Madness artwork and explains why Europe deliberately chose a traditional creative process rather than turning to AI. He also shares stories from the band’s recent music videos—including how a real-life injury involving actor Peter Stormare unexpectedly became part of the visual concept for “One On One.”
Then there are the guests. Ghost’s Tobias Forge and Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt both wound up contributing to the album, and Michaeli reveals how what began as an informal studio visit turned into something more.
40 Years of The Final Countdown
Four decades later, “The Final Countdown” has grown far beyond its original place in Europe’s catalog. Michaeli talks about hearing the song in unexpected corners of the world and why it now feels as though it belongs as much to the audience as it does to the band.
There is also the story of the time Europe considered doing the unthinkable: playing a show without “The Final Countdown.”
