Becky Baldwin and Jørn Lande on Making Tony Iommi’s From the Dark

Two interviews. One episode.

Tony Iommi’s solo album From the Dark brought bassist Becky Baldwin and vocalist Jørn Lande into the same project at very different points. In two interviews for one Metal Mayhem ROC podcast episode, Metal Walt asks each musician what they heard in Iommi’s riffs and where they found room to make the songs their own.

Finding the Sound of From the Dark

Baldwin brought her bass to Iommi’s home studio for a first meeting. The track they put in front of her was “World Alone,” which became the album’s first single. With much of the arrangement already in place, where could she leave her mark?

Lande went in thinking he might sing one or two songs. He takes Walt back to the early recordings, including “Stormwatcher,” and to the point when it became clear his role might be bigger than he expected.

A Ronnie James Dio Tribute and a Brian May Solo

Walt remembers seeing Lande share the stage with Glenn Hughes and members of Heaven & Hell at the High Voltage Festival. Lande recalls preparing for that Ronnie James Dio tribute with little rehearsal time and a long list of songs to learn.

Back on From the Dark, Baldwin remembers how she found out Queen’s Brian May had played on “Death Wake.” The way Iommi broke the news is a story best heard from her.
