Raven Close Out a Resurgent U.S. Run with Momentum on Their Side

May 06, 2026

On the final night of a relentless North American tour, Raven arrived in Bradenton, Florida, with more than just miles behind them. After 40 cities in roughly 45 days, the band isn’t talking about survival; they’re talking about momentum. This Metal Mayhem ROC conversation with John Gallagher captures a band not looking back, but actively pushing forward, energized by what may be one of their strongest U.S. runs in years.

Speaking with Southern Cal and Bill the Rager, Gallagher reflects on a tour that exceeded expectations both onstage and behind the scenes. Packed rooms, returning fans, and an influx of younger listeners all converged into a run that reaffirmed Raven’s place as a live force in modern metal.

The Catalyst

The foundation for this tour was built on a simple but increasingly rare outcome: people showing up. Gallagher notes that fans who hadn’t seen the band in decades were coming back out, alongside first-time concertgoers discovering Raven through newer channels. The challenge of reconnecting with audiences in a fragmented media landscape was real, but this run proved that the demand was still there.

A major factor in that reach came through touring with Slackjaw. What was initially an unknown variable became a key driver of new audience engagement. Younger fans, many attending their first rock show, stayed for Raven’s set and responded immediately. That crossover created an organic expansion of the band’s audience, something Gallagher acknowledges is nearly impossible to manufacture in today’s environment.

The Creative Process

While the tour dominated the schedule, the band’s next chapter is already well underway. Gallagher confirms that Raven has amassed a significant cache of material for the next album, much of it written prior to his recovery from last year’s incident. Revisiting those songs now provides a different perspective, allowing the band to reassess and refine with fresh ears.

The process remains deliberate. Rather than rushing into recording, the band is shaping the material with sequencing in mind, thinking in terms of flow, pacing, and impact. Gallagher describes a method rooted in classic album construction, identifying openers, closers, and standout moments before narrowing the tracklist down to a tight, focused record. Recording is slated to take place across the summer months, with sessions planned between June and August.

Sound, Intent, or Message

At its core, Raven’s approach hasn’t changed, but the way they refine their material continues to evolve. Collaboration is central, with each member contributing ideas and pushing songs beyond their initial form. Gallagher emphasizes the importance of questioning whether a track can be improved, whether by adding elements or stripping them away entirely.

Drummer Mike Heller plays a key role in that evolution. As he approaches another album with the band, his influence is increasingly embedded in the writing process. Gallagher credits him with injecting energy and ideas that elevate the material, creating a dynamic where songs develop far beyond their starting point. The result is music that maintains Raven’s identity while benefiting from a more expansive creative exchange.

Touring / What’s Next

If the U.S. run was about reestablishing momentum, the next phase is about maintaining it. There’s little downtime ahead. What Gallagher refers to as a “break” will largely be spent addressing the physical toll of the tour and preparing for the next leg. By mid-May, the band heads to Europe, beginning in the Netherlands before moving through Germany, Belgium, Spain, and Greece, with additional dates extending into Eastern Europe.

Beyond that, Raven will return to Europe later in the year and continue building toward the next album cycle. The pace reflects a band intent on making up for lost time, and Gallagher confirms that by the end of the year, they expect to be fully caught up, if not slightly ahead, in terms of activity.

Why This Interview Matters

This conversation captures Raven at a rare intersection of legacy and immediacy. Rather than leaning on history, the band is actively expanding its audience and refining its future output. The success of this tour, both commercially and in terms of crowd response, signals a band operating with renewed purpose.

Gallagher’s reflections also highlight a shift in how metal bands sustain relevance. Live performance, physical product, and direct fan engagement are now central pillars, replacing the traditional structures that once defined success. Raven’s ability to adapt without losing their identity is what makes this moment significant.
