Motörhead Guitarist Phil Campbell Dies At 64
Phil Campbell, longtime guitarist for legendary heavy metal band Motörhead, has died at the age of 64. The news was confirmed by Campbell’s family, who said the musician passed away peacefully following a “long and courageous battle in intensive care after a complex major operation.”
Born in Pontypridd, Wales, Campbell became a defining part of Motörhead’s lineup when he joined the band in 1984 alongside fellow guitarist Michael “Würzel” Burston. He remained with the group for more than three decades, helping shape the band’s aggressive, high-energy sound during one of the most influential eras in heavy metal. Motörhead ultimately disbanded in 2015 following the death of iconic frontman Lemmy Kilmister.
In a statement shared on social media, Campbell’s family remembered him not only as a musician but as a beloved family man. “Phil was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a proud and loving grandfather, known affectionately as ‘Bampi,’” the statement read. “He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be missed immensely. His legacy, music and the memories he created with so many will live on forever.”
Campbell first began playing guitar at the age of 10 and was performing with local pub and cabaret bands around South Wales by the time he was a teenager. Before joining Motörhead, he formed the heavy metal band Persian Risk in 1979. His playing style blended blues-influenced phrasing with the thunderous volume and speed that became synonymous with Motörhead’s sound — a style that helped influence generations of metal musicians.
Following Motörhead’s final years, Campbell continued performing with his family band, Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, which featured his three sons and carried forward his unmistakable guitar tone and stage energy. His final performances included a sold-out hometown show at the Muni Arts Centre in Pontypridd.
Tributes from across the rock and metal community have begun pouring in, including a message from German metal singer Doro Pesch, who said she was “at a loss for words” and called Campbell a dear friend.
Phil Campbell’s legacy as one of heavy metal’s most recognizable rhythm guitarists lives on through the music he helped create with Motörhead and through the countless fans and musicians influenced by his powerful playing.
