Night Ranger guitarist Brad Gillis joins Metal Mayhem ROC as the band celebrates its recently released Best Of collection, a project connecting the songs that established Night Ranger with standout material from its more recent records.
It arrives while Night Ranger remains firmly in motion. The band continues to play more than 80 shows a year, while Gillis is balancing touring with guitar-product development and work on a solo record. For him, revisiting the catalog isn't about putting a period on Night Ranger's story — it's another way of keeping it moving.
The Catalyst
Night Ranger typically likes to make a new record every couple of years, but its current touring schedule hasn't provided enough time to properly write and record one.
That opened the door to another idea: go back into the catalog, remix and remaster selected material, and bring together different eras of the band.
“We thought, ‘You know what? Why don’t we do a compilation of the best of, go in and remaster, remix some of the stuff.’”
But Gillis makes clear that Best Of isn't simply built around the obvious ’80s hits. The band also wanted to put a spotlight on strong material from its more recent albums that may not have received the same exposure.
The Creative Process
Modern production technology gave Night Ranger an opportunity to revisit its early recordings with a different sonic perspective. Gillis jokes that those original records sounded good, but “they didn’t go to 11.”
The band could now give that material additional weight while selecting songs from later albums that deserved another chance to reach listeners.
Those choices also have implications beyond the record itself. Night Ranger is looking at bringing some less-familiar material back into the live set, giving Best Of a role in what the band does next rather than treating it strictly as a retrospective.
Sound, Intent, or Message
For Gillis, “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me” still captures the essential Night Ranger formula. More than four decades after its release, it remains his favorite song to play live.
“That’s the nucleus, the dawn of Night Ranger.”
The twin guitars, harmonies and massive chorus established an identity that became inseparable from Night Ranger's early success. But Gillis is equally interested in what happened after that breakthrough.
By putting newer material alongside those familiar songs, Best Of offers a broader picture of a band whose recording history continued long after its first MTV explosion.
Touring / What’s Next
Night Ranger's schedule remains remarkably active. Gillis describes the band as “weekend warriors,” often heading out Thursday, playing Friday and Saturday and returning home Sunday.
There is also unfinished business. Gillis says Night Ranger wants to make another album of new material when touring finally provides enough room to write and record it.
His own calendar is equally crowded. Gillis is finishing a long-developing solo record while working with StewMac on guitar products he has designed, including a Brad Gillis model pickup.
As he puts it, “the machine rolls on.”
