There are rock-and-roll stories everyone thinks they already knows — and then there are the stories that only come from someone who actually lived inside the scene.
In this episode of Metal Mayhem ROC, we sit down with Alycen Rowse, author of We’ve Got Tonight: The Life and Times of Notorious Groupie Alycen Rowse and the voice behind the Cocktails & Rock Tales YouTube channel, for a raw, unfiltered conversation about what life around rock stars was really like — beyond the myths, clichés, and stereotypes.
This is not a glamorized retelling.
It’s firsthand experience.
How It Started: Van Halen and the Door That Opened Everything
Alycen’s entry into the rock world didn’t begin with fame-chasing or intention. It began with curiosity, a deep love of music, and being in the right place at the right time.
As a teenager attending a Masonic Rainbow Girls convention in Kansas City, she found herself staying at the same hotel as Van Halen. What followed — including her first encounter with David Lee Roth — wasn’t framed by fantasy, but by comfort, safety, and a sense of belonging she didn’t feel elsewhere.
That theme comes up repeatedly throughout the conversation: not thrill-seeking, but finding a tribe.
Redefining “Groupie” — From the Inside
One of the most revealing parts of the interview is Alycen’s definition of the word groupie — a term she challenges head-on.
To her, being a groupie was never about money, fame, or transactional relationships. It was about becoming part of a moving family — the road crew, the musicians, and the inner circle that existed beyond the stage.
She speaks openly about boundaries, emphasizing that “no” always meant no, and that many assumptions about indiscriminate behavior simply weren’t true.
Backstage Reality: Access, Power, and Unspoken Rules
The conversation doesn’t shy away from how access actually worked in the 1980s and ’90s rock world.
Alycen confirms the existence of systems where roadies and tour managers acted as gatekeepers, deciding who went backstage and who didn’t. She describes rivalries between women, informal communication networks long before social media, and the reality that backstage life was often competitive — but rarely chaotic.
This wasn’t randomness.
It was a structure — understood by everyone involved.
When Relationships Became Real
Among the most personal moments in the interview are Alycen’s reflections on her friendship and relationship with James Hetfield of Metallica.
She describes how emotional connections could form quickly on the road, where time is compressed and intimacy accelerates. What might take months in normal life could happen in days.
These weren’t one-dimensional encounters. They were relationships shaped by loneliness, trust, and the need for grounding.
The Myth Cracks: Tragedy and Consequence
The interview takes a serious turn when Alycen recounts the night John Entwistle died in Las Vegas — an event she witnessed firsthand.
Her account challenges long-standing narratives, including misinformation around substance use and what actually happened in his final hours.
She also recounts the tragic AC/DC concert incident where overcrowding led to multiple deaths — a reminder that rock history includes consequences, not just excess.
Beyond the ’80s: A Life Spent Around Music
Alycen’s story doesn’t stop with hair metal. Over the years, she crossed paths with artists from multiple genres — including Nikki Sixx, Robert Plant, hip-hop artists, athletes, and actors.
Her perspective remains consistent: music mattered more than celebrity. Relationships mattered more than headlines.
Today, she continues telling these stories through her book and Cocktails & Rock Tales, preserving a version of rock history that rarely gets told by those who actually lived it.

As we close out 2025 and step into 2026, this episode stands as a reminder: rock history isn’t just written on stage — it’s written backstage, in hotel rooms, tour buses, friendships, and moments most people never see.
KEEP IT HEAVY.
