Lex Legion: Andy LaRocque and Pete Blakk Forge a New Chapter in Heavy Metal

Jun 12, 2026

Heavy metal fans may recognize the names involved, but Lex Legion is not interested in recreating the past. The new band featuring Andy LaRocque, Pete Blakk, Mikkey Dee, Hal Patino, and vocalist Nils K. Rue arrives with a self-titled debut album built on chemistry, patience, and a shared love of classic metal songwriting.

During their conversation with Metal Mayhem ROC, LaRocque and Blakk discussed the origins of the project, the creative process behind the debut album, the addition of Nils K. Rue, favorite songs from the record, and plans to bring Lex Legion to the stage. The result is a band focused firmly on the present while embracing the musical instincts that shaped its members decades ago.

The Catalyst

Although Lex Legion officially emerged in recent years, some of its roots stretch back much further. According to LaRocque, he and Blakk first started exchanging riffs as far back as 2008. One of those early ideas eventually evolved into “Far Away,” the instrumental piece that closes the debut album.

The project truly gained momentum in 2021 when Blakk connected with Mikkey Dee before bringing LaRocque and Hal Patino into the fold. Rather than rushing toward a release, the band took advantage of the slower pace created during the pandemic years.

That patience became a defining characteristic of the album. The musicians spent years refining material, evaluating songs, and making sure every track earned its place on the record. By the time the album was completed, LaRocque felt the band had achieved exactly what it set out to accomplish with its debut.

The Creative Process

One of the most revealing moments of the interview centered on the songwriting partnership between LaRocque and Blakk.

Despite decades passing since they first worked together, both musicians described the chemistry as virtually unchanged. Blakk referred to the collaboration as unfinished business and explained that working together remains remarkably natural. The two guitarists continue to employ the harmonized leads, trade-off solos, and melodic interplay that helped define their musical identity.

LaRocque echoed those sentiments, noting that while the band members may be older and more experienced, the creative connection remains intact. Rather than forcing ideas, songs develop organically. Both musicians emphasized how surprisingly smooth the process has been, from songwriting through recording, mixing, and mastering.

That chemistry is particularly evident throughout the album's guitar arrangements, where lead parts often feel less like individual performances and more like conversations taking place inside the songs themselves.

Sound, Intent, or Message

A recurring theme throughout the interview was the band's desire to establish its own identity.

Lex Legion was never conceived as a continuation of any previous project. Instead, the musicians wanted to create music that reflected who they are today while remaining true to the influences that shaped them.

Blakk described the music as loud, hard, and melodic, with dark and mystical elements woven throughout the material. LaRocque pointed to the band's collective musical upbringing in the late 1970s and 1980s as a natural influence, but stressed that the songs are written from the heart rather than from a desire to recreate the past.

The addition of Nils K. Rue proved critical to achieving that vision. After considering multiple vocalists, LaRocque revisited a previous collaboration with Rue and suggested him to the rest of the band. Once they heard him perform over the demos, the decision became obvious. His voice brought a distinctive ingredient that helped complete the sound of Lex Legion.

Several songs received special attention during the discussion. Blakk identified “I Am The Resurrected,” “Sleep Eternally,” and “Gypsy Tears” as tracks that best represent the band's overall identity, while LaRocque highlighted “Saviors” for its powerful chorus and unique groove.

Touring / What’s Next

Lex Legion's future extends well beyond the debut album.

The band already has ideas taking shape for a second record, with several songs currently in development. While some material was left off the debut, the group appears more focused on creating new music than revisiting old ideas.

Live performances are also becoming a reality. A showcase performance is scheduled for November in Gothenburg, Sweden, serving as an introduction of Lex Legion to journalists, industry professionals, and fans.

Beyond that, both musicians made it clear that 2027 is expected to become the band's major live year. Fans can expect additional performances as the group continues building momentum and expands its catalog.

Why This Interview Matters

Lex Legion represents something increasingly rare in modern heavy metal: experienced musicians creating new music without relying solely on nostalgia.

Throughout the conversation, LaRocque and Blakk consistently emphasized forward motion. The focus remains on songwriting, collaboration, and building a band with its own identity rather than revisiting former achievements.

The debut album reflects that philosophy. It combines decades of experience with a genuine enthusiasm for creating music together, resulting in a project that feels both familiar and fresh.

For fans searching for classic songwriting values delivered through a modern lens, Lex Legion offers a compelling new chapter.
