Frank Hannon on Tesla's New Tribute Album Homage, 40 Years of Tesla, and What's Next

Jul 03, 2026

Tesla has spent more than four decades building one of hard rock's most respected catalogs, but the band's latest release looks beyond its own music. Homage is Tesla's new tribute album, honoring the legendary artists and songs that helped shape the band's sound long before Mechanical Resonance introduced them to rock audiences.

In this conversation with Metal Walt, guitarist and co-founder Frank Hannon discusses the inspiration behind Homage, how Tesla selected the songs, why the band included a new original track, the upcoming summer tour with Mötley Crüe and Extreme, and why Tesla continues to evolve while remaining true to its roots.

The Catalyst

For Frank Hannon, Homage was never intended to be just another covers record. Instead, it became an opportunity for Tesla to recognize the artists whose music influenced the band from the very beginning.

The album pays tribute to iconic performers including Freddie Mercury, Elvis Presley, James Brown, Etta James, and Hank Williams Sr. Rather than simply reproducing familiar recordings, Tesla approached each song with respect for the original performance while allowing its own personality to shine through.

Hannon explains that even the album's title reflects the project's mission: paying homage to the musicians and vocalists whose work inspired generations of artists, including Tesla's own Jeff Keith.

The Creative Process

The idea for Homage developed through collaboration. Hannon credits bassist Brian Wheat with helping shape the concept before the band worked together to refine the final track list.

Many of those discussions happened backstage before concerts, where the members debated songs that not only fit the album's vision but also suited Jeff Keith's unmistakable voice. Hannon also describes the challenge of studying some of rock's greatest guitar performances, learning from them while ensuring Tesla's interpretations remained authentic rather than simple recreations.

The result is an album that respects its influences while still sounding unmistakably like Tesla.

Sound, Intent, or Message

Although Homage celebrates music from the past, Tesla also wanted to remind fans that the band continues creating new material.

That commitment led to the inclusion of "Never Alone," the album's lone original song. Hannon explains that the track continues Tesla's tradition of writing uplifting music centered on hope, perseverance, and connection.

The discussion also turns to Tesla's own catalog as the band marks 40 years since the release of Mechanical Resonance. Hannon reflects on those early recording sessions, explains why that era remains so meaningful, and reveals which Tesla album he still considers the band's finest work.

Touring / What's Next

Tesla returns to the road this summer as part of a major amphitheater tour alongside Mötley Crüe and Extreme.

Hannon discusses what fans can expect from the shows, reflects on memorable tours throughout Tesla's career, and revisits the spontaneous performance that ultimately became the legendary Five Man Acoustical Jam. He also shares how his perspective on touring has changed over the years, including his decision to leave behind the excesses traditionally associated with rock and roll in favor of a healthier lifestyle.

Even after four decades, Tesla continues balancing new music with the legacy that has made the band one of hard rock's enduring names.

Why This Interview Matters

Frank Hannon offers more than stories about Tesla's past. He provides an honest look at a band that continues moving forward while honoring the artists who inspired its journey.

Whether discussing Homage, explaining the creative process behind the album, reflecting on 40 years of Tesla, revealing his favorite Tesla album, or describing why mentoring up-and-coming bands has become one of the most rewarding parts of his career, Hannon demonstrates why Tesla remains both creative and relevant.

This interview captures a veteran musician who continues to embrace new challenges while never losing sight of the music that made Tesla who they are.
