Xite Labs creative director Greg Russell created the Time Stand Still in-concert Neil Peart tribute video featured during Rush’s 50-Something Tour. His connection to the project, however, began years before its abstract imagery appeared onstage.
In this Metal Mayhem ROC interview, Russell joins Jon “The Vernomatic” Verno and Metal Walt to discuss the friendship, memories and creative decisions behind the video—along with his perspective on this new chapter for Rush.
Inside the Time Stand Still In-Concert Tribute Video
Russell explains how Rush video director Alan Weinrib invited him to develop something different from a traditional photo montage. The resulting animated piece draws upon Peart’s words, travels and personal interests through images including a riderless motorcycle, floating handwritten lyrics and drums on the water.
What did those symbols represent, and which ideas never made it into the concert presentation? Russell takes the interview inside the creative process without separating the work from the person who inspired it.
The Friendship Behind the Imagery
The story reaches back to Russell purchasing NeilPeart.net for $9.95 and offering his design work when Peart needed a website. That unlikely beginning developed into lunches, California hikes and motorcycle journeys between Rush tour stops.
Russell discusses seeing another side of Peart during those travels and how their shared experiences informed details within the Time Stand Still video. He also reflects on playing Rush’s music with the tribute band Natural Science.

Russell also shares his initial reaction to Rush’s 50-Something Tour announcement and Anika Nilles joining Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson.
